My Poor Apple Tree!

My apple tree has been in a few of my photos over the years, at least I think it has...well I know it was in the photos the time I posted about me chasing the PARAKEET down the alley trying to catch it, but anyway I got home today and went to let Lucy out and there laid my apple tree! At first I started to go and blame my neighbor because he was in the back yard yesterday and asked "do you care if I cut down this tree" and I told him "dont you cut down my apple tree!" but he meant a different one and I didn't care if he cut it down. My neighbor is one of those folks that has to be moving and doing something every waking moment. Being the person I am, who has been known to sit on the couch for two hours and just stare out the window without moving, his type fascinates me and tires me out just watching him.

I went out to look at the tree and soon realized I couldn't blame my neighbor since the tree snapped right above the roots. We have had some really strong winds today and I guess a good gust got a hold of it. Right now I am thinking I might need to put Lucy on a leash to take her out to potty and keep a hold of it in case she gets blown away! *okie starts laughing at the image in her head of Lucy flying in the wind like a kite*.

I am going to miss that tree. It provided a lot of entertainment for me in the summer. It is one of the trees the squirrels use to run up to get away from Lucy when she would chase them. Another thing I will miss is floating in the pool and watching the squirrels eat the apples. I think I provided entertainment for them as well, they probably were always trying to figure out what that huge floating island was in that little pool!

I never got many apples from the tree, they were the little green ones that were more for making cooked apples than just eating off the tree, but I always enjoyed the blooms in the spring time and watching the animals that were attracted to it.

I am gonna miss my little apple tree!

  1. Girl, I am with you. We have a big ole crabapple tree in our front yard. Hubby threatens to chop it down. he won't though, as we love watching the birds eat the frozen fruit and then fly away feeling very tipsy. This winter we have deer coming ujp to munch on them. It is great to have nature visit us in the city!

  3. Okie, If it has just on connected root just raise it back up.
When we moved here in 1982 we had an apple tree laying over on it's side, but we left it there because my boys liked playing inside of it. It is still living to this day. As a matter of fact it is the only one that I have left. So it could live.

  4. What a shame. Sorry about your tree. At least your neighbor wasn't to blame. That would be uncomfortable.

  5. I agree with AndreaA. If there are ANY connected roots, prop it back up, water it, and wait a month or so. It might surprise you. Our Texas weather just might let it live. I have a 30 foot crepe myrtle that grew back from a tiny root left after a tree was removed.

  6. Sorry about your apple tree. I know what you mean, in my case it was a peach tree. Big storm, lightening, then no more tree! I think you should go out and get a new tree and plant it. Any kind of tree you think you and the squirrels would like. Might take a while before the squirrels can climb it, depending on how big a tree you start with, but well worth the time and effort.

  7. Your poor tree! I remember when I was little watching the wind uproot an apricot tree on my parents farm. AND, I am married to one like your neighbor. Like the Enegizer bunny whose batteries never run down. Me, give me a good book (I have a Nook and a Kindle!) and a cozy blanket and I am happy.

  8. Awe... so sorry to hear about your tree! My first home had trees galore and I enjoyed them so much. If you cannot save it, I agree with the others, plant a new one!

  9. Soooo sorry to hear about your apple tree Okie! The wind does some crazy things.... We've had the crazy wind here too but nothing has fallen like that! If you would like another apple tree your more than welcome to come and uproot one of mine! I have 3 of them! Use to have 4 but took it out cuz it didn't look right in the front yard.... Seriously... the front had 3 in a row and it looked sooo wierd... after we removed that one the yard seemed to have a better balance to it! I also have 2 cherry trees and a green plum tree... YES LOTS OF TREES! :o) HUGS! :o)

  10. Our neighbor did the same thing, but with a Japanese maple-they propped it back up. And it lived. You could try it, but with it just being the start of a possibly windy and stormy spring, you might have to tie it to some rebar stakes or something!
Well, I did it. I ordered the white cling mount film off ebay. I saw another girl using it in a video on YouTube and I checked back to your site and its the same brand. The one with the turtle. I'm wondering how quickly it will get to Arkansas from Arizona (or wherever it was.) I know it is going to take me forever to unmount all those dollar stamps I have, but they just take up too much room. Thanks for the info. I'll let you know how it goes!
